Abstract
Climate change is a global phenomenon due to global warming, characterized by a general increase in average temperatures. This change is linked to industrial activity, in particular to the greenhouse effect, which is why it is said to be of human origin. Alongside scientists, writers now include themes linked to global warming. New genres have appeared such as climate fiction. Thomas B. Reverdy, in his novel Climax describes the end of the world in the context of global warming. The action takes place in the north, towards the Arctic. The story involves various protagonists who remember Norse legends about the end of the world and the twilight of the gods. One of them Noah, “the master of the game” explains that the rise in temperature is disrupting the ecosystem, thus threatening certain number of species. The ice will melt and cause the ice floe to fracture and begin to drift dangerously. The company and the States, responsible for these disturbances (because of the release of gases which cause the greenhouse effect) were compensated because the melting of the sea ice facilitated access to resources and the exploitation of wealth; moreover, it opened up new avenues of trade, even if this led the world to a disaster. A problem arises: how does this novel represent the issues of climate change? What does the narrator propose to face the danger? To resolve this issue, we will address: 1- The structure of the story and the methods of inserting scientific knowledge into the story. 2- Analysis of the association between scientific fidelity and the narrative imperatives of fiction. 3- The function of the characters: role of exploiters and their responsibility. 4- The role of literature: toll the knell and mobilize the public to confront an inherent danger.
French Abstract
Le changement climatique est un phénomène global dû au réchauffement du climat, caractérisé par une augmentation générale des températures moyennes. Ce changement est lié à l’activité industrielle, notamment à l’effet de serre, c’est pourquoi on dit qu’il est d’origine humaine. À côté des scientifiques, des écrivains intègrent désormais des thèmes liés au réchauffement climatique. De nouveaux genres sont apparus telle que la fiction climatique. Thomas B. Reverdy, dans son roman Climax décrit la fin du monde dans un contexte du réchauffement climatique. L’action se situe au nord, vers l’Arctique. Le récit met en action divers protagonistes qui se souviennent des légendes nordiques sur la fin du monde et le crépuscule des dieux. L’un d’eux Noah, « le maître du jeu » explique que l’élévation de la température perturbe l’écosystème, menaçant ainsi un certain nombre d’espèces. La glace fondra et entraînera la fracture de la banquise qui se met à dériver dangereusement. La compagnie et les États, responsables de ces dérèglements (à cause de dégagement de gaz qui provoque l’effet de serre) étaient satisfaits parce que la fonte de la banquise facilitait l’accès aux ressources et à l’exploitation des richesses ; de plus, elle frayait de nouvelles voies d’échanges, même si cela conduit le monde au désastre. Une problématique se pose : comment ce roman représente -t-il les enjeux du changement climatique ? Que propose le narrateur pour affronter le danger ? Pour résoudre cette problématique, nous aborderons : 1- La structure du récit et les modalités de l’insertion des connaissances scientifiques dans le récit.2- L’analyse de l’accord entre la fidélité scientifique et les impératifs narratifs de la fiction. 3- La fonction des personnages : rôle des exploiteurs et leur responsabilité.4- Le rôle de la littérature : sonner le glas et mobiliser le public pour affronter un danger immanent.
