Abstract

By taking "three strong women" as heroines, Marie NDiaye brings out the paradoxical strength of characters caught up in the destructive mechanisms of stories with uncertain endings. We perceive in these women the models of a resilience whose restorative grace is inscribed the intersubjective relations of which they are the hearths. This hypothesis invites us to observe how these relationships, threatened by an alienating confusion, get out of it, but also to locate the opaque zones of the narratives which designate the fragility of the process. Resilience could be the faculty of escaping from the dead life, that which makes them know the reflex of the withdrawal on oneself for a preservation without other goal than to flee the suffering. By refusing to collude with the deadly exercise of violence, the protagonists restore in themselves the dignity of the human person, concentrated in the faculty of answering to oneself and to the other. As for the reader, he is provoked by the ambivalences of the narratives to a hermeneutic choice reflecting the existential choice of the characters: the question is posed to him of the confidence to grant – or to refuse – to an original goodness of the human being and of life.

French Abstract

En prenant pour héroïnes « trois femmes puissantes », Marie NDiaye fait ressortir la force paradoxale de personnages entraînés par les mécanismes destructeurs d’histoires aux dénouements incertains. On perçoit en ces femmes les modèles d’une résilience dont la grâce réparatrice s’inscrit au cœur des relations intersubjectives dont elles sont les foyers. Cette hypothèse invite à observer comment ces relations, menacées par une confusion aliénante, s’en extraient, mais aussi à localiser les zones opaques des récits qui désignent la fragilité du processus. La résilience pourrait être chez eux la faculté d’échapper à la vie morte, celle que leur fait connaître le réflexe du repli sur soi pour une préservation sans autre but que de fuir la souffrance. En refusant la collusion avec l’exercice mortifère de la violence, les protagonistes restaurent en eux la dignité de la personne humaine, concentrée dans la faculté de répondre de soi et à l’autre. Quant au lecteur, il est provoqué par les ambivalences des récits à un choix herméneutique reflétant le choix existentiel des personnages : la question se pose à lui de la confiance à accorder – ou à refuser – à une bonté originaire de l’être humain et de la vie.
